Suriname’s men’s national football team, Natio, qualified for its first-ever CONCACAF Gold Cup and represented Suriname in the USA in July 2021. The team chose to represent Suriname as the most forested country on earth: they wore unique shirts with the Suriname flag and the Forest93 message, and voiced that message in their many interviews with the international press. The team created a lot of buzz as a talented newcomer, but with one win and two losses in the group stage it did not go through to the next round.
The Forest93 commercial below wished Natio success at the Gold Cup: Ala gi Mama Sranan (All for Mother Suriname, or Suriname’s forest). The title comes from Natio’s pre-match yell, wan gi ala, ala gi wan: one for all, all for one, in Sranantongo.
