Solar Energy for schools in Amatopo and Coeroeni

To enhance the educational infrastructure in south-western Suriname, a sustainable solar energy initiative was implemented at the newly constructed public schools in the remote indigenous villages of Amatopo and Coeroeni. The project turns the classrooms into fully functional, modern learning environments by bringing reliable, renewable electricity to some of the country’s most isolated regions.

Key impacts

• Modernised education: solar power enables teachers to integrate digital tools into their lessons, including beamers, electronic media and wifi connectivity.
• Adult and evening literacy: reliable indoor lighting removes the constraints of daylight hours, making evening education a reality and allowing local adults to pursue primary school diplomas after working hours.
• Community utility: beyond the classroom, the solar systems provide a charging point where villagers can power mobile phones and other essential personal devices, strengthening regional communication.

Partners and financing

This community upgrade was made possible through an international funding partnership. The project was financed and organised through the collective efforts of Rotary Amsterdam West, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Central and Rotary Intradam, working alongside local community leaders to ensure long-term sustainability.
