About Jean-Pierre “JeanPie” Veira
Jean-Pierre is a young Surinamese who spent his formative years in the Amazon region. Growing up in a family that regularly explored the jungle, he developed a lasting passion for the natural world.
Today he is a seasoned cameraman and photographer who shares the wonders of nature with his fellow Surinamese. He believes that a connection between people and the environment is crucial for conservation, and has made it his mission to bring his compatriots closer to the natural world.
In a country where snakes are often misunderstood, Jean-Pierre dedicates himself to dispelling misconceptions and educating others about them. He is a member of Suriname Snake Patrol, which helps people capture and release snakes that come into contact with people. Widely known as “the snake man”, he combines his knowledge of herpetology with his photography to create images that show the beauty of the natural world and serve as a tool for environmental education.
In cooperation with Forest93 and the Keep Suriname Green campaign, Jean-Pierre held his first exhibition of nature photography from 21 to 23 March 2024, during the Green Awareness Expo and Earth Hour event at the Torarica Resort in Paramaribo. It was very well received.
His dedication to conservation and his artistry make him a distinctive figure in both nature exploration and photography. His work captures the essence of the Surinamese landscape and inspires a renewed appreciation for the delicate balance between people and the environment. Jean-Pierre regularly shares his knowledge of biodiversity, especially snakes, on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. The video below is one of his educational wildlife videos.
