About Forest93

Ninety-three per cent of Suriname is forest. No country on earth has more of it left standing. We think striving to keep it that way is 100% Surinamese. Don’t you?

The pledge, and the part that came after

At COP-23 in Bonn, the Government of Suriname promised the world it would work to keep 93% forest cover, forever. In the same breath it said the harder half out loud: Suriname cannot carry that promise alone, and will need the world’s help to pay for it and to build the skills it takes.

A pledge is not a forest. Somebody still has to plant, teach, film, measure and argue for it, year after year. That is what this campaign is for.

What we actually do

Forest93 is run by the Green Growth Suriname Foundation, and it comes down to three things. We make the case for the nature legislation Suriname still does not have. We build tools that let ordinary people collect the evidence those laws will need. And we tell people — children first — what this forest is worth to them.

Since 2019 that has meant schools in villages that never had one, food gardens and a food forest for children’s homes, an app for citizen scientists, a campaign song and a web series, Busi Taki.

Mostly, though, it has meant people. The Forest93 Ambassadors — athletes, artists, scientists and entrepreneurs — put their name to the forest, and then show up and do the work.
